Labour Leader flying high with community group

Bolsover District Labour Group Leader, Steve Fritchley is continuing with his commitment to promote local groups as he recently visited Scarcliffe Model Aircraft Flying Club.

Steve went to see what the group did, how he could help promote them and even had a go at flying a model aircraft himself.

The club started in 2018 after breaking away from the Bassett Model Flying Club who lost their field and had to move further away. After finding a field near the village, the founder members of the club spent many hours removing stones from the field before it was levelled and seeded and turned into the lovely grass strip they now use.

The club currently have 31 members, who help pay for the rent and grass cutting on the field they operate from.

Steve said, “It was great to go and visit the club and learn what they do. They have a lot of experience and know-how and although they are not currently looking for new members my offer to help and assist them wherever I can is always there.”

Steve, who has been an enthusiast of model flying since he was a youngster was delighted when he took control of one of the aircraft, under the expert guidance of trainer John.

“It certainly brought back some memories and it instilled that passion in me once again for flying,” said Steve. “It is a great club and one that not only offers the chance to create new friendships, but provides people with new skills as well, which is exactly what I want to encourage more of.”

The club fly a range of planes from big competition aerobatic planes to the simplest trainer, with everything in-between. They have a fairly even mix between electric and internal combustion engines amongst the members, with many preferring the sound and smell of the traditional glow motor while others prefer the convenience of electric power.

The club has two British Model Flying Association (BMFA) sanctioned examiners so members can take a range of safety and achievement tests designed to both promote safe flying and improve skills.
