Labour rescues village’s heritage from callous Tories

A local Labour Parish Council has stepped in to save a heritage museum after the Tories ‘kicked’ them out of their building.

Langwith and Whaley Thorns Heritage Centre had occupied the building off North Street for a number of years and kept the grounds and surrounding area clean and tidy - all at their own expense. But owners, the Conservative Derbyshire County Council, told the group they had to vacate the premises as they wanted to sell the building.

So, with nowhere to go and with the fear of hundreds of years of history being lost, up stepped Langwith Parish Council to save the day and offer them a new home in the Community Centre to the rear of Whaley Thorns Village Hall. And on top of that the Parish Council are provided the venue completely free of charge.

Local district and parish councillor for Langwith, Sandra Peake said, “This organisation provides a valuable resource and insight into the heritage and history of Langwith and Whaley Thorns and to be told they had to get out with nowhere to go, is disgusting. All the artefacts, memorabilia and photos could have been lost forever.

“We are extremely fortunate to have such a valuable resource like this for our Parish, that’s why we had to step in as a Parish Council to offer them a home.

“It seems everything the Tory county council owns they want to either sell off or close down. They have closed Adult Day Care Centres. They have closed Care Homes. They seem intent on closing libraries. And now this. It seems the only thing they provide in our communities are pot holes – and we certainly have plenty of them!”

Langwith and Whaley Thorns Heritage Centre is open Wednesdays from 10am to 3pm and other days by appointment only.

Labour locally is delivering. Labour in government will also deliver.
